First Swallows of the year!

Prospecting for a place to nest

I just heard and then saw two Swallows flying over on my way into work here in Padiham in Lancashire. It’s always means a lot to me when I observe this as it’s a sure sign that summer is not far off and I have always been in awe of the enormous distances and tribulations these tiny birds endure to get here.

I’m currently editing a draft with the working title; ‘The Swallow’s return to our skies’, maybe, just maybe, these could be the same birds I saw flying south six months ago?

Please keep your eyes open for this Springtime spectacle and why not share some photos of your first sightings? soon I’ll get round to finishing this article where you can read all about the heroic ordeals this Passiform member of the Hirundinidae family have to go through and how important these majestic yet miniscule midge-eating marvels are to our country’s ecology and history.

Hi, my name is Alexander Burton-Hargreaves, I live in the Northwest of England and have over two decades of experience working in and studying the fields of land management and conservation. As well as ecology and conservation, in particular upland ecology, I am also interested in photography, classical natural history books, architecture, archaeology, cooking and gardening, amongst many other things. These are all subjects I cover in my articles here and on other sites and I plan to eventually publish a series of books on the history and wildlife of Northern England.
